Colordle is a daily color guessing game originally created by Ryan Tanenholz. The core game — guessing a mystery color from over 30,000 named colors using similarity percentages — is brilliant and works great. This project was never about replacing the original. It was a fun exercise in taking an existing concept with solid mechanics and reimagining the UI from the ground up. We built a fresh frontend with a login system for persistent stats and streaks, cleaner visual hierarchy, and an interface that lets the colors themselves take center stage.

Origin

Built on a great idea.

The original Colordle by Ryan Tanenholz is a fantastic game. You guess a color name, get a similarity score, and try to zero in on the daily mystery color. The mechanics are addictive and well thought out. We didn't touch any of that — the game works. What we saw was an opportunity to explore what the experience could feel like with a different visual approach. A UI redesign as a creative exercise, not a replacement.

Game Mechanics

Similarity scoring that teaches you color.

Each guess returns a percentage score based on how close the guessed color is to the target in color space. 95-100% means nearly identical. 80-94% is very close. Below 60% and you're still searching. Guesses are sorted by similarity so you can see your progress. After three guesses, a color swatch hint appears — giving you a visual clue without giving away the name. It's a system that rewards both color knowledge and strategic thinking.

Design Decisions

Let the colors do the talking.

The UI stays deliberately minimal. A dark input area, clean typography, and generous spacing so the color swatches next to each guess pop. Every guess row shows the color name, its hex code, a similarity percentage, and a status indicator. The interface doesn't compete with the content — the colors are the content. We kept the chrome minimal so the experience feels more like play than software.

30,016 colors. One answer. Every day.

Colordle resets daily with a new mystery color. Your streaks, stats, and history persist through the login system — so you can track your progress over time and compete with friends.

Auth & Persistence

Stats that stick around.

Without an account, your stats only last for the day. The login system lets players save their streaks, win rates, and guess distributions across sessions and devices. It's lightweight — no email blasts, no social features beyond your own stats. Just enough to make the daily habit feel rewarding and give you a reason to come back.
